Hillyer, George-Captain June 13, 1861 . Commanded regiment at Fredericksburg, Va. December 13, 1862 , and at Gettysburg, Pa. July 1, 1863 .(Capt. Hillyer actually assumed command 2 July 1863 after Lt. Col. Mounger was killed, and Maj. Jones was wounded, and Capt. King was mortally wounded during the attack of the Wheatfield on 2 July, 1863) Resigned, having been appointed Auditor of State Road, October 17, 1863 . (This position tendered before resignation, Governor stating he needed military man for said position, as State Road was main supply to Johnston's Army.) Early in 1864 he organized the State Road Battn. and was placed in command with rank of Major. Surrendered, Atlanta, Ga. May 10, 1865 .(Born in Georgia in 1836.)
